This is the next question that you will face when playing guitar. “What do you really need to have to actually play the guitar?” Obviously, you’ll need a guitar but it’s not all about just getting one, you will also need some other basics as well. You have to start making the right preparations and start somewhere. Take note that the common mistake people make is to rush things without figuring out what exactly needs to be done. Here are 5 essential things you need to learn guitar.
The Guitar
You will need a guitar, but remember that it isn’t just any guitar. It is actually your first guitar! Or if you had a guitar before and stopped learning but want to learn now, then this guitar will actually be the first guitar that you will truly learn how to play. It should be something that you’d be proud of!
You don’t just choose any guitar as well. You will have to choose between an acoustic or electric guitar. These two are the most common types. Luckily, it doesn’t matter which you try first or which you can afford. As long as it has the right sound and right tune, then that’s already perfect! Though one advantage of the acoustic guitar is that you can easily carry it around the house or anywhere else and play it and hear the sounds directly. In contrast to an electric, where you’ll need an amplifier or speaker. But of course I don’t expect you to walk around while playing so it doesn’t matter much.
A good sense of music
Now we come to the next essential thing to have. Well it’s actually not a physical thing it is a concept. You will need a good sense of music to understand the role of the guitar. It’s ironic if you want to learn guitar and hate music at the same time. Being familiar with the world of music is great. Choose your own style or your favorite records and stick to those first, you will need that as a source of motivation on your journey.
Determination
Now another important aspect of learning guitar is actually determination. You go talk to all those successful guitarists and even those people who succeed in other aspects, perhaps a successful entrepreneur. They have one thing in common and that is determination. It will be pretty useless to start learning guitar and not have a will to finish it. This is one common cause of failure for those starting out. But you don’t have to fall under that category for you actually have determination in you. You’ll also figure out that it’s easy to stick to the plan once you start to get serious and have momentum.
A chord list/ diagram
This is actually an important thing to have. Get a chord list in the Internet or from books and manuals. You don’t have to go for the G7 chords or Bm7 chords, just get a good list of the basics (C, G, A F, B, D and E). You will learn those first to create sounds, which the guitar is meant to be used for. You may have to learn about scales as well, but if you are still starting out, you don’t need them just yet, perhaps on a later course though. Always carry that handy list of chord diagrams if you are still starting out. You’ll need them as reference wherever you go. It may even be best to pack it with your guitar case.
A song that you have to play
A favorite song is a great one to have in learning guitar. I mentioned in my other post that you will need a song to target. A good song, preferably those that don’t have insane guitar licks, are the best for you. Always start with a very simple song that you’re comfortable with, perhaps your favorite. The process is basically to play the song with the chords that you will learn. You may want to get the basic chords of that song in song books if you are still starting out. It’s not cheating it’s just something that you need to do for now, don’t worry later on you will learn how to play a song by just listening to it once. But for now, just settle with one song. This is your first song to learn so give special attention to it.
Those are the basic things that you need in order for you to learn guitar. This absolutely applies to those who haven’t really touched a guitar yet and for those who have tried learning it and didn’t succeed. These are the essential things to get started. Take your time and don’t rush things. Prepare these first and you will get around smoothly once you really start training.
